Crossword Genius

Peninsula that might be Burmese poking into a bit of China (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

yucatan

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'peninsula' is the definition.
(Yucatan is an example)

'burmese poking into a bit of china' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'a' could be 'an' and 'an' is found within the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'that might be' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for yucatan that I've seen before include "Region of Mexico" , "N. Mexican peninsula" , "Mexican peninsula where Mayas lived" , "Alcoholic drink" , "part of Mexico" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
