Persistently ask relatives for fruit (7)

I believe the answer is:
pumpkin
'fruit' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'persistently ask relatives' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
'relatives' could be 'kin' (kin can mean relatives or family) and 'kin' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'pump' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'for' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for pumpkin that I've seen before include "Type of squash" , "Gourd - source of Cinderella's coach" , "Orange-yellow fruit" , "Huge yellowy fruit" , "Large fruit with many seeds" .)
