Person the dog found to its taste? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

curate

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'person' is the definition.
(curate is a kind of person)

'the dog found to its taste?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is located in the answer.
'dog' could be 'cur' (both can mean a despicable person) and 'cur' is found within the answer.
The remaining letters 'ae' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This may be the basis of clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for curate that I've seen before include "Organise exhibition" , "Priest, a vicar's assistant" , "Parson" , "Parish priest's assistant" , "His egg is said to be good in parts." .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
