Picks up most of the stuff in the rubbish container (4)
I believe the answer is:
skip
'rubbish container' is the definition.
'skip' can be an answer for 'container' (I have seen 'large container' mean 'skip' so perhaps 'container' could also mean 'skip'). I'm not certain of the 'rubbish' bit.
'picks up most of the stuff' is the wordplay.
'picks' becomes 'sk' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'up' says the letters should be written backwards (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'most of' means to remove the last letter.
'the stuff' becomes 'pig' (both can mean to eat lots of food).
'pig' with its final letter taken away is 'pi'.
'pi' in reverse letter order is 'ip'.
'sk'+'ip'='SKIP'
'in the' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for skip that I've seen before include "leave something out" , "Hop, omit" , "Omit; fail to attend" , "Prance - pass over" , "Omit - refuse container" .)
