I believe the answer is:

meal

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue might be a double definition.

'picnic on the banks' is the first definition.
The definition and answer can be both things that one consumes for nourishment as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'the mexican canal' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'of' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for meal that I've seen before include "Scoff" , "dinner, maybe" , "Food for male" , "Eg, breakfast" , "Food ground up" .)

I've seen this clue in the Irish Times.
