Pictures aim to change European country after bloke departs (7)

I believe the answer is:
imagery
'pictures' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'aim to change european country after bloke departs' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
an anagram of 'aim' is 'ima' which is within the answer.
'european' could be 'e' (abbreviation e.g. EU) and 'e' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for imagery that I've seen before include "Visual symbolism" , "Figurative language, eg, in poem" , "I'm gayer (anag)" , "Use of language to produce pictures in the mind" , "paintings" .)
