Ross

I believe the answer is:

saint

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This clue could be a double definition.

'pious person' is the first definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'disheartened when cut short' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for saint that I've seen before include "Holy man" , "paragon!" , "eg Pancras" , "Very virtuous person" , "eg Paul, Peter, Valentine" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
