Crossword Genius

Plant life I had eradicated in US state (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

flora

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'plant life' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'i had eradicated in us state' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'i' could be 'a' and 'a' is present in the answer.
'state' could be 'or' and 'or' is present in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for flora that I've seen before include "Plants < girl" , "growth" , "list of plant life" , "growing things" , "Plants of a region or age" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
