Crossword Genius

Plate up for gannet? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

animal

'gannet?' is the definition.
(gannet is an example)

'plate up' is the wordplay.
'plate' becomes 'lamina' (I've seen this before).
'up' says the letters should be written in reverse (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'lamina' reversed gives 'ANIMAL'.

'for' is the link.

(Other definitions for animal that I've seen before include "Source of meat" , "One sharing our kingdom" , "Such as 13 ac" , "I''m Alan (anag) - a wild, crazy person" , "Mammal" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
