Crossword Genius

Platitude from old male hugged by lady at wedding (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bromide

'platitude' is the definition.
('bromide' can be a synonym of 'platitude')

'old male hugged by lady at wedding' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'old' could be 'o' (common abbreviation eg in OE for Old English) and 'o' is found in the answer.
'male' could be 'm' (common abbreviation) and 'm' is found in the answer.
'lady' could be 'bride' and 'bride' is located in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

'from' is the link.

(Other definitions for bromide that I've seen before include "print" , "Trite remark" , "Sedative" , "Trite fob-off" , "that could send you to sleep?" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
