Crossword Genius

Poet loves swallowing litre in Italian wine village (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bardolino

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'wine village' is the definition.
'Bardolino' can be an answer for 'wine' (I've seen this before). I am not sure about the 'village' bit.

'poet loves swallowing litre in italian' is the wordplay.
'poet' becomes 'bard' (bard is a kind of poet).
'loves' becomes 'oo' (love means 0 in tennis).
'swallowing' indicates putting letters inside.
'litre in italian' becomes 'lin' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'oo' enclosing 'lin' is 'olino'.
'bard'+'olino'='BARDOLINO'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bardolino that I've seen before include "Kind of red" , "Red wine from northern Italy" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
