Crossword Genius

Point east of bend in US toll road (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

turnpike

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'toll road' is the definition.
(I know that toll road can be written as turnpike)

'point east of bend' is the wordplay.
'point' becomes 'pike' (pike is a kind of point).
'east of' says to put letters next to each other (some letters go to the right of others).
'bend' becomes 'turn' (synonyms).
'pike' put after 'turn' is 'TURNPIKE'.

'in us' is the link.
This may not be right. Some or all of it may belong to another bit of the clue.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for turnpike that I've seen before include "Old gates across a road to prevent passage until a toll was paid" , "American highway" , "Pay money to get past this" , "where one pays one's way" , "way in the US" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
