I believe the answer is:

accident

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'pile-up?' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'police force on part of hospital after current' is the wordplay.
'police force on' becomes 'cid' (I can't explain this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'part of hospital' becomes 'ent' (abbreviation for Ear, Nose and Throat department).
'after' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'current' becomes 'ac' (alternating current).
'cid'+'ent'='cident'
'cident' put after 'ac' is 'ACCIDENT'.

(Other definitions for accident that I've seen before include "Dance tic leading to mishap" , "Fortune" , "Chance misfortune or injury" , "Unexpected and unplanned event" , "Unexpected incident" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
