Political parties go head to head on golf channel? (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

billabong

'channel?' is the definition.
(I have seen 'Australian channel' mean 'billabong' so perhaps 'channel' could also mean 'billabong')

'political parties go head to head on golf' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'parties' could be 'll' (two L's - L can mean the Labour Party) and 'll' is found in the answer.
'on' is present in the answer.
'golf' could be 'g' (phonetic alphabet: alpha, bravo, charlie etc.) and 'g' is present in the answer.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

(Other definitions for billabong that I've seen before include "Australian pool" , "A stagnant pool of water in Australia" , "Australian channel" , "Branch of an Australian river formed by an overflow" , "Australian backwater -- no big ball (anag)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
