Pony neither here nor there? (5,4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

small beer

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'pony' is the first definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'neither here nor there?' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot understand how one could define the other.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for small beer that I've seen before include "Trivia -- sell amber (anag)" , "what one may get in the pub" , "no significance" , "Unimportant matter (or drink?)" , "Something of little importance" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
