Crossword Genius

Popular archaeological site has nothing in the shade (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

indigo

'the shade' is the definition.
(shade of blue)

'popular archaeological site has nothing' is the wordplay.
'popular' becomes 'in' ('in' can mean trendy).
'archaeological site' becomes 'dig' (I've seen this in another clue).
'has' says to put letters next to each other.
'nothing' becomes 'O' (looks like zero - 0).
'in'+'dig'+'o'='INDIGO'

'in' is the link.

(Other definitions for indigo that I've seen before include "Violet dye" , "Blue-purple colour in spectrum" , "Tropical plant" , "Settlement; New Mexico native" , "product of woad" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
