Predator that apparently prays in mass with enemies (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

mantis

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'predator that apparently prays' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both animals as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'mass with enemies' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'mass' could be 'm' (symbol used in Physics e.g. f=ma) and 'm' is found in the answer.
The remaining letters 'antis' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'in' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for mantis that I've seen before include "Large insect (sometimes praying?)" , "Large-eyed insect, looks as if it's praying" , "Insect often seen in praying posture" , "Carnivorous insect, which rests as if in prayer" , "Preying animal, the female of which is deadlier than the male!" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
