President almost evacuated troops behind jets (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

bidets

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'jets' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both man-made objects as well as being plural nouns.
Perhaps they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'president almost evacuated troops behind' is the wordplay.
'president' becomes 'biden' (Joe Biden).
'almost' means to remove the last letter (almost the whole word is kept).
'evacuated troops behind' becomes 'ts' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'biden' with its final letter removed is 'bide'.
'bide'+'ts'='BIDETS'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for bidets that I've seen is " washing facilities".)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
