Crossword Genius

Proceeded with punishment from coach, entering river backwards (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

elapsed

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'proceeded' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with motion as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe there's a link between them I don't understand?

'punishment from coach entering river backwards' is the wordplay.
'punishment from coach' becomes 'laps' (I can't explain this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'entering' is an insertion indicator.
'river' becomes 'dee' (River Dee).
'backwards' is a reversal indicator.
'dee' in reverse letter order is 'eed'.
'laps' going into 'eed' is 'ELAPSED'.

'with' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for elapsed that I've seen before include "Pleased to have passed" , "slipped away" , "Passed, of time" , "Went by" , "Pleased (anag.)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
