Crossword Genius

Producing one stage of the family (10)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

generation

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'family' is the definition.
(I know that family can be written as generation)

'producing one stage of the' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'one' could be 'i' (Roman numeral) and 'i' is present in the answer.
'stage' could be 'era' (I've seen this before) and 'era' is found in the answer.
'of' could be 'o' and 'o' is located in the answer.
'the' could be 't' (the is pronounced as a 't' sound in some dialects) and 't' is found within the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for generation that I've seen before include "group of similar age" , "peer group" , "young" , "Everyone of same age" , "production" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
