Progress smoothly when getting into bed (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

coast

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'progress smoothly' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'when getting into bed' is the wordplay.
'when' becomes 'as' (eg 'when I walked' means 'as I walked').
'getting into' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'bed' becomes 'cot' (cot is a kind of bed).
'as' put into 'cot' is 'COAST'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for coast that I've seen before include "Littoral region" , "See 9" , "Seaside - freewheel" , "Land beside the sea" , "Cruise" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
