Crossword Genius

Promise of freedom? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

parole

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

This might be a double definition.

'promise' is the first definition.
(I know that parole is a type of promise)

'freedom?' is the second definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't see how one could define the other.

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for parole that I've seen before include "Early conditional release for prisoner in jail" , "Promise (that prisoner is released on)" , "Lop ear (anag.)" , "(One's) word" , "Promise - conditional release" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
