Crossword Genius

Prophet in dreadful jail, shackled by what? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

elijah

'prophet' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'dreadful jail shackled by what?' is the wordplay.
'dreadful' indicates an anagram.
'shackled by' means one lot of letters goes inside another (I've seen this in other clues).
'what?' becomes 'eh' (I've seen this in another clue).
'jail' is an anagram of 'lija'.
'lija' put inside 'eh' is 'ELIJAH'.

'in' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for elijah that I've seen before include "Hebrew prophet in the time of Jezebel" , "O.T. prophet who disappeared in fiery chariot" , "he prophesied" , "Hebrew prophet who disappeared in fiery chariot" , "Old Testament prophet" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
