'proves' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with social activities as well as being verbs in their -s form.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I don't see?

'satisfactory when one gets an open-air job' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'satisfactory' could be 's' (abbreviation in education) and 's' is found within the answer.
'open' could be 'out' (I've seen this in other clues) and 'out' is located in the answer.
'job' could be 'work' (synonyms) and 'work' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
