Crossword Genius

Prudence and the endless division (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

thrift

'prudence' is the definition.
(I know that thrift is a type of prudence)

'the endless division' is the wordplay.
'endless' means to remove the last letter.
'division' becomes 'rift' (I've seen this in another clue).
'the' with its last letter taken off is 'th'.
'th'+'rift'='THRIFT'

'and' acts as a link.

(Other definitions for thrift that I've seen before include "Practise this to save money" , "Good husbandry" , "Taking care of money" , "Careful management of money" , "Careful control of resources" .)

I've seen this clue in The Daily Express.
