Push on a jumper with first part of spring (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

frogmarch

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'first part of spring' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with motion as well as being verbs in their base form.
Maybe they are linked in a way I don't understand?

'push on a jumper' is the wordplay.
'push' becomes 'march' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'on' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'a jumper' becomes 'frog' (something which jumps).
'march' put after 'frog' is 'FROGMARCH'.

'with' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for frogmarch that I've seen before include "Force someone to move" , "Unceremonious arrest method" , "Hustle person forward with his arms held fast" , "Forcibly remove someone" , "Force (person) to move forward" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
