'told?' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both related to thinking as well as being past participle verbs.
Maybe you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'put it on without being' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'it' could be 'e' ('e' can mean 'electronic' which is similar to 'IT') and 'e' is found within the answer.
'being' could be 'md' (MD is an example) and 'md' is found in the leftover letters.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
