Crossword Genius

Queen and king running to palace guards (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

cleopatra

'queen' is the definition.
(Cleopatra is an example)

'king running to palace guards' is the wordplay.
'king' becomes 'r' (r is abbreviation for rex).
'running' indicates anagramming the letters.
'guards' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'to'+'palace'='topalace'
'topalace' with letters rearranged gives 'cleopata'.
'r' going inside 'cleopata' is 'CLEOPATRA'.

'and' is the link.

(Other definitions for cleopatra that I've seen before include "Egyptian queen, d. 30 BC" , "drama queen" , "Good part for actress" , "Old queen of Egypt" , "Queen of the South" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
