Crossword Genius

Question role at odd stages for part of a fingerprint (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

whorl

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'part of a fingerprint' is the definition.
(I've seen this in another clue)

'question role at odd stages' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'question' could be 'who' (who is a question word) and 'who' is located in the answer.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'for' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for whorl that I've seen before include "botanical feature" , "A turn in a spiral shell" , "Convolution eg in the ear" , "Fingerprint's circular ridge" , "Helix" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
