Crossword Genius

Quietly copies the geometrical figures (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

shapes

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'geometrical figures' is the definition.
'shapes' can be an answer for 'figures' ('shape' can be a synonym of 'figure'). I'm not certain of the 'geometrical' bit.

'quietly copies' is the wordplay.
'quietly' becomes 'sh'.
'copies' becomes 'apes' ('ape' can be a synonym of 'copy').
'sh'+'apes'='SHAPES'

'the' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for shapes that I've seen before include "Forms, outlines" , "Triangle, globe etc" , "Specific forms of things" , "10, 17 and 22, for example" , "Oblong and square, say" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
