Crossword Genius

Radio the writer - a friend on the continent (3)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

ami

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'friend on the continent' is the definition.
'ami' can be an answer for 'friend' ('friend' in French). I am unsure of the 'on the continent' bit.

'radio the writer a' is the wordplay.
I cannot really understand how this works, but
'writer' could be 'i' (the person who is writing these clues) and 'i' is present in the answer.
'a' is within the answer.
A single letter 'm' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for ami that I've seen before include "friend abroad?" , "Friend (Fr.)" , "Parisian's friend" , "Mon . . . - my French friend" , "buddy" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
