Crossword Genius

Raise carbon capture by tree regeneration (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

erect

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'raise' is the definition.
(I know that raise can be written as erect)

'carbon capture by tree regeneration' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'carbon' could be 'c' (chemical symbol) and 'c' is found in the answer.
an anagram of 'tree' is 'eret' which is located in the remaining letters.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for erect that I've seen before include "Standing vertically" , "Crete (anag)" , "Upright; construct" , "Not having a list" , "Found" .)

I've seen this clue in the Sydney Morning Herald.
