Ross

I believe the answer is:

bile

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'rancour' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I can't understand how one could define the other.

'british and french island' is the wordplay.
'british' becomes 'b' (abbreviation e.g. in 'BBC').
'and' means one lot of letters go next to another.
'french island' becomes 'ile' ('island' in French).
'b'+'ile'='BILE'

'in' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for bile that I've seen before include "Anger, bitterness" , "Spleen" , "Irritability, bad temper" , "Peevish temper; a liver secretion" , "Ill-temper" .)

I've seen this clue in The Sun.
