Records describing battles around urban aggregation? (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

sprawl

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'urban aggregation?' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I don't understand how one could define the other.

'records describing battles around' is the wordplay.
'records' becomes 'lps' (LP is an example).
'describing' indicates putting letters inside (describe can mean to form the outline of).
'battles' becomes 'war' (I've seen this in other clues).
'around' shows that the letters should be reversed in order.
'lps' going around 'war' is 'lwarps'.
'lwarps' backwards is 'SPRAWL'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for sprawl that I've seen before include "Uncontrolled urban development" , "Sit or lie with limbs spread out" , "What stragglers do" , "Fall with limbs spread out" , "Spread out irregularly over a large area" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
