Red robin, for example, flew off earlier (4-6)
I believe the answer is:
left-winger
'red' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)
'robin for example flew off earlier' is the wordplay.
'robin for example' becomes 'winger' (robin is a type of bird ie 'winger').
'flew off' becomes 'left' (fly off can mean to leave).
'earlier' says to put letters next to each other.
'winger' put after 'left' is 'LEFT-WINGER'.
(Another definition for left-winger that I've seen is " Socialist".)
I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
