Crossword Genius

Reflects Germany's refusal to take in Gort Gas (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

nitrogen

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'gas' is the definition.
(I know that nitrogen is a type of gas)

'reflects germany's refusal to take in gort' is the wordplay.
'reflects' says the letters should be written backwards.
'germany's refusal' becomes 'nein' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'to take in' means one lot of letters goes inside another.
'nein' going around 'gort' is 'negortin'.
'negortin' backwards is 'NITROGEN'.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for nitrogen that I've seen before include "Inert nog is an inert gas" , "It forms about four-fifths of atmosphere" , "Gas forming about four fifths of the atmosphere" , "It makes up 78% of air" , "that's dominant in the air" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Times.
