Crossword Genius

Reject police officers with leads from any very odd witnesses (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

disavow

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'reject' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both to do with communicating as well as being verbs in their base form.
Perhaps you can see an association between them that I can't see?

'police officers with leads from any very odd witnesses' is the wordplay.
'police officers' becomes 'dis' (I've seen this in other clues).
'with' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'leads from any very odd witnesses' becomes 'avow' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'dis'+'avow'='DISAVOW'

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for disavow that I've seen before include "To deny knowledge of" , "Refuse to acknowledge" , "Disclaim" , "To deny support" , "Deny responsibility for (something)" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
