Crossword Genius

Relate where Italian author inspired by Hamlet? (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

recount

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'relate' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'italian author inspired by hamlet?' is the wordplay.
'italian author' becomes 'eco' (Umberto Eco).
'inspired by' is an insertion indicator (some letters breathed in or 'inspired' by others).
'hamlet?' becomes 'runt' (I can't justify this - if you can you should give a lot more credence to this answer).
'eco' put into 'runt' is 'RECOUNT'.

'where' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for recount that I've seen before include "Give report" , "Check numbers" , "Tell a story" , "result of close-run ballot" , "Relate" .)

I've seen this clue in The Guardian.
