Renter with key piece of office equipment (6,6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

letter opener

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'office equipment' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both man-made objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe you can see a link between them that I don't see?

'renter with key piece' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'key' could be 'opener' (I've seen this in another clue) and 'opener' is present in the answer.
'piece' could be 'letter' (I have seen 'Piece of correspondence ' mean 'letter' so perhaps 'piece' could also mean 'letter') and 'letter' is present in the answer.
This accounts for all the letters.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'of' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for letter opener that I've seen before include "device for getting information from correspondents out" , "Desktop tool" , "which could be dear, eg" , "Desktop blade" , "Item on desk" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
