I believe the answer is:

'repairs' is the definition.
I know nothing about this answer so I can't tell whether this works.
'on inverted cross very near' is the wordplay.
'on' is a charade indicator (letters next to each other).
'inverted' says the letters should be written backwards.
'cross' becomes 'rood' (term for a crucifix).
'very near' becomes 'atones' (I can't justify this - if you can you should believe this answer much more).
'rood' in reverse letter order is 'door'.
'door' put after 'atones' is 'AT ONES DOOR'.
