Crossword Genius

Residents show up, going in opposite directions (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

natives

'residents' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'show up going in opposite directions' is the wordplay.
'show' becomes 'evita' (musical).
'up' is a reversal indicator (in down clue: letters go upwards).
'going in' indicates putting letters inside.
'opposite directions' becomes 'ns' (opposite compass points).
'evita' backwards is 'ative'.
'ative' going within 'ns' is 'NATIVES'.

(Other definitions for natives that I've seen before include "Indigenous inhabitants" , "oysters" , "Local inhabitants of specified place" , "The people born in particular place" , "Local inhabitants of place or country" .)

I've seen this clue in The Times.
