Crossword Genius

Rev motor giving six a lift (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

vicar

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'a lift' is the definition.
Although both the answer and definition are singular nouns, I cannot see how they can define each other.

'rev motor giving six' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'motor' could be 'car' (informal term for car) and 'car' is located in the answer.
'six' could be 'vi' (Roman numerals) and 'vi' is located in the answer.
No letters remain.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for vicar that I've seen before include "Local priest" , "See stand-in" , "Goldsmith novel ''The . . . . . of Wakefield'' (5)" , "Man (or woman) of the cloth" , "Oliver Goldsmith wrote 'The . . . . . of Wakefield'" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
