Crossword Genius

Revolting fellow who swilled beer when starting lunch (5)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

rebel

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'revolting fellow' is the definition.
The answer and definition can be both people as well as being singular nouns.
Perhaps you can see an association between them that I don't see?

'swilled beer when starting lunch' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite see how this works, but
an anagram of 'beer' is 'rebe' which is located in the answer.
A single letter 'l' remains which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

'who' is the link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for rebel that I've seen before include "One who fights authority" , "Resistance fighter" , "Kick over the traces" , "Bolshy" , "Rise in armed opposition" .)

I've seen this clue in the Evening Standard.
