Crossword Genius

Riding equipment obtained by theologian in auction (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

saddle

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'riding equipment' is the definition.
'saddle' can be an answer for 'equipment' (I have seen 'Equestrian equipment' mean 'saddle' so perhaps 'equipment' could also mean 'saddle'). I am not certain of the 'riding' bit.

'theologian in auction' is the wordplay.
'theologian' becomes 'DD' (Doctor of Divinity degree).
'in' indicates putting letters inside.
'auction' becomes 'sale' (I've seen this in another clue).
'dd' going into 'sale' is 'SADDLE'.

'obtained by' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for saddle that I've seen before include "Cut of meat" , "Impose a task on -- assign responsibility for" , "Burden; seat" , "Seat for a rider, horse or bike" , "Cycle seat" .)

I've seen this clue in The Irish Independent.
