Ring Harold about the dog (7)
I believe the answer is:
pointer
'the dog' is the definition.
(pointer is a kind of dog)
'ring harold' is the wordplay.
I cannot quite understand how this works, but
'ring' could be 'o' (O is the shape of a ring) and 'o' is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'pinter' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...
'about' acts as a link.
Can you help me to learn more?
(Other definitions for pointer that I've seen before include "Guide" , "Game dog, used for its ability to scent" , "Tip; dog" , "Gun dog" , "The dog provides an indication" .)
