I believe the answer is:

'rise' is the definition.
(I know that rise can be written as ascent)

'like money' is the wordplay.
'like' becomes 'as'.
'money' becomes 'cent' (eg denomination of dollars).
'as'+'cent'='ASCENT'

(Other definitions for ascent that I've seen before include "Stance (anag)" , "lift" , "A climb or way up" , "(A) climb (up mountain)" , "advancement" .)
