Rock destroyed remote locations lacking cover (9)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

meteorite

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'lacking cover' is the definition.
The definition and answer can be both natural objects as well as being singular nouns.
Maybe there's an association between them I don't understand?

'rock destroyed remote locations' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
an anagram of 'remote' is 'meteor' which is located in the answer.
The remaining letters 'ite' is a valid word which might be clued in a way I don't see.
This may be the basis of the clue (or it may be nonsense).

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for meteorite that I've seen before include "fallen stone" , "Matter in the solar system that reaches earth" , "Lump from space" , "Rock that falls to earth" , "Something falling from the sky" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
