Roots music of black origin recalled cutting-edge sounds? (8)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

parsnips

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'roots' is the definition.
(I know this)

'music of black origin recalled cutting-edge sounds?' is the wordplay.
I cannot really see how this works, but
'music' could be 'par' (I have seen 'Black music' mean 'par' so perhaps 'music' could also mean 'par') and 'par' is located in the answer.
'cutting' could be 'snip' (snip is a kind of cutting) and 'snip' is present in the answer.
A single letter 's' remains which might be clued in a way I don't understand.
This explanation may well be incorrect...

Can you help me to learn more?

(Other definitions for parsnips that I've seen before include "Snip spar with the vegetable" , "Veg" , "Things growing in garden" , "Snip spar, oddly, of the vegetables" , "roots" .)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
