Crossword Genius

Row about a pair of model-types being more tawdry (7)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

tattier

I'm a little stuck... Click here to teach me more about this clue!

'more tawdry' is the definition.
Both the answer and definition are comparative adjectives. Perhaps you can see a link between them that I don't see?

'row about a pair of model-types' is the wordplay.
'row' becomes 'tier' (a tier is a row of things).
'about' says to put letters next to each other.
'a pair of model types' becomes 'tat' (I am not sure about this - if you are sure you should believe this answer much more).
'tier' after 'tat' is 'TATTIER'.

'being' acts as a link.

Can you help me to learn more?

(Another definition for tattier that I've seen is " More shabby".)

I've seen this clue in The Independent.
