Crossword Genius

Rows ship around lake (6)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

series

'rows' is the definition.
(I've seen this before)

'ship around lake' is the wordplay.
'ship' becomes 'SS' (prefix in ship names eg SS Great Britain).
'around' is an insertion indicator.
'lake' becomes 'erie' (Lake Erie is one of the Canadian/US 'Great Lakes').
'ss' going around 'erie' is 'SERIES'.

(Other definitions for series that I've seen before include "Number of similar things arranged in order" , "Progression of things" , "Set of things in line" , "See 8" , "Progression or sequence" .)

I've seen this clue in The Telegraph.
